Arbantone

Arbantone is one of Nairobi's newest homegrown sounds. It grew out of the city's club and matatu culture in the early 2020s, taking the energy of Gengetone and pushing it faster, with rapid, bouncy drums, chopped vocal samples and a beat made for jumping rather than swaying. Lyrics are mostly in Sheng, playful and quotable, and many songs are built around a single catchy chant.

Because it's so young, Arbantone moves fast. Producers trade drum kits, dancers invent moves for new tracks, and a song can go from a bedroom session to every party in town within weeks. Short-video trends have carried it well beyond Nairobi.
